Responding
to well versed and pointedly directed bitching is a difficult predicament. The previous article (see: A Senior's Prespective
on Graduation '04) is eloquently phrased, in places, and gives one pause to consider the information it directs at the new
editor of this humble site. I will freely admit that when my article, Graduation, was written, though it may have dampened
the spirits of certain individuals, including the spirit of a certain senior in the broadcast department who worked exceedingly
diligently on the senior farewell video, it must be taken into account the experiences behind the new editor's comments.
I have been accused of being
unaware of the "pre-planning" that is involved in the graduation exercise. This is absolutely untrue. As a student who has
had the privilege to attend the last THREE pre-graduation practices, I know the energy and time spent to refine the time-tested
ritual of receiving one's diploma. I will admit that I have not yet had the pleasure to cross that stage and receive my 5"x5"
piece of paper proclaiming me certified by the state of New Mexico to attempt to procure myself a place in the world as a
contributing member of society, I have seen many a graduation and have attended many a graduation practice.
The graduation process is
an experience to be savored by all involved. Don't get me wrong, a bit of jealous bitching was involved in my previous article,
but that jealousy was meant lovingly and with the best of intentions. I didn't dwell on the video montage, it was jsust mentioned
in passing. We all need to step back and realize that I was standing up for the integrity of our seniors... I remember writing
something along the lines of being appalled at the "butchering of perfectly good names" -- hello, I was fighting for you guys,
Saba. I respect our seniors and I respect their graduation.
And one last thing: the equal
representation wasn't for me as a junior, it was for all of the seniors who weren't recognized in the slightly biased "tribute."
The music and theater departments work just as hard as the athletic and broadcast department, just with 1/4 of the funding
and even less support.
So just to clarify, my last
editorial was bashing neither the graduation nor the graduation process, just the administrators and the like who hindered
it slightly with their creative pronunciations of names. And to you seniors who are still dwelling on it, why bother yourself
with my comments, you're out of this underling's school of knowledge, remember?
